The story is set in the city of Funtime, where a girl is struggling to go on her first date. Due to her lack of confidence, her parents are trying to help her. The story revolves around the girl’s journey to overcome her shyness through dance. The player is tasked to help her succeed in her first date by mastering her dance moves and gaining confidence in herself.
Friday Night Funkin First Date can be played using either touch or mouse controls. The players can use the cursor and other controls to navigate menus, interact with other characters and objects, and move the character around the game environment. The main game controls are as follows:
Friday Night Funkin First Date is played using a simple three-button control layout; left and right for vertical movement and the pink button at the bottom to initiate gestures. The dance moves are initiated by making the right gesture at the right time and rhythm. The gesture is made by pressing and holding the pink button and swiping in the direction of the control.
The goal of the game is to make the correct dance steps on the seven dance mats. Each of the mats have a unique color and the dance steps must match the color of the mat. The game gives bonus points to players who are able to match the steps with the skinny girl in the middle of the mats.
The game consists of seven levels with two difficulty modes, "Easy" and "Hard". The "Easy" mode is a basic introduction of the game that helps the players learn the basic gestures and mechanics. Each level has three objectives; make the correct dance steps to gain confidence, get bonus points by matching the steps with the skinny girl in the middle, and complete the level. The levels are divided into three categories; the first three are easier, the next three are tougher, and the last one is the most difficult. Once all levels are completed, the game is over.
